There are special greases and lubricants that are used
in the mechanisms to permit a smooth mechanical action. After a period of time, pieces of
tape, tape oxide and dust will get mixed in with the grease and become "sludge".
When this happens, the mechanism will not move everything properly. Besides causing a tape
to jam or misload, they can squeek. The same
can happen if the surfaces are "dry" or lacking lubricants.
In many cases, cleaning, lubrication and alignment will prevent this. If your product is a couple of years old, the rubber belts and roller(s) may have become stretched or hard. This can also cause noises.
