What has happened is that the mechanical alignment of
the "deck" has changed and you get either noise lines
at the top, at the bottom or both. On newer models you may just get a "blue"
screen triggered by the video mute circuit. Technicians call
this an interchangeability problem, which requires a tape
path alignment.
We frequently get this complaint. VCR's and Camcorders need annual maintenance. The
tolerances in the tape loading and tape functions are very small. So small in fact, that
alignment requires special measuring devices and an oscilloscope.
The cure can be as inexpensive and as a professional cleaning and alignment or replacement
of worn guide rollers. In a very small number of cases, there is also a circuit problem.
